The Short Answer
No. Avios cannot be transferred to Chase Ultimate Rewards, and there is no workaround that does it. Points move in one direction only — from a bank programme out to an airline — and once they land in British Airways, Iberia or Aer Lingus, they are Avios permanently.
This trips people up because the Chase transfer page makes the relationship look like a two-way street. It is not. The transfer button exists on the Chase side and has no counterpart on the airline side. Why Transfers Only Run One Way
The rule is not an oversight, and no amount of asking politely will change it. When you transfer Ultimate Rewards to an airline, Chase is buying miles from that airline on your behalf, at a rate the two of them negotiated in advance. Real money changes hands. The airline issues you miles it now owes you a seat for, and it books that obligation as a liability.
A reverse transfer would ask the airline to buy those miles back and hand Chase cash for them. No airline has any reason to agree: it would be paying to extinguish a liability it is generally happy to carry, and it would hand customers a way to arbitrage transfer bonuses — move points out during a 30% bonus, move them back at par, repeat. Every major bank programme works this way. Amex Membership Rewards, Citi ThankYou, Capital One and Bilt are all one-way and final for exactly the same reason.
There is one narrow exception worth knowing, and it is not a feature. If you transfer by mistake — wrong programme, wrong amount, a slip you report quickly — Chase has occasionally reversed transfers as a one-off service gesture. It requires calling, it is entirely at their discretion, and it is not something to plan around. Treat every transfer as permanent, because that is what it is.
What You Can Actually Do With Avios You Already Moved
Avios are unusually flexible once you stop trying to send them backwards. Three things are genuinely available.
Move them between Avios programmes. British Airways Club, Iberia Club, Aer Lingus AerClub and Qatar Privilege Club all share the same Avios currency, and you can shift a balance between them yourself, instantly and for free. The account must be at least thirty days old before it can send or receive, and the name and email have to match across programmes. This matters more than it sounds: the same award can cost noticeably less in one programme than another, so the ability to move the balance to whichever chart prices your route best is close to having several airlines' worth of miles at once.
Pool them with other people. A British Airways Household Account lets up to seven people at the same address contribute to a shared pot. Iberia went further in February 2026 with Family Accounts — also up to seven people, but with no requirement that anyone live together, so friends and colleagues qualify. One caveat that catches people: Avios sitting in a BA Household Account cannot be transferred out to another Avios programme. Only your own personal balance can move.
Spend them where the chart is cheap. Iberia off-peak to Madrid starts at 17,000 Avios one-way in economy, which is among the least expensive ways to cross the Atlantic on points. Can I move miles from one airline to a different airline? Almost never. The Avios family is the notable exception, and it works because those airlines share a single currency rather than because they are transferring anything. Outside arrangements like that, airline programmes do not exchange miles with each other.
Can I cash miles out to a bank account or a statement credit? No. Some programmes let you spend miles on merchandise, gift cards or seat upgrades, but the value is usually poor and none of it puts money or bank points back in your hands.
Can I combine two balances I hold in the same programme? Yes, if they are genuinely yours — most programmes will merge duplicate accounts on request. Combining balances held by different people is what household and family accounts are for.
Do Avios expire? They expire after three years without account activity, and any qualifying activity restarts the clock. This is worth knowing precisely, because an inactive balance is the one real way stranded Avios turn into lost Avios.
How to Avoid Stranding Points in the First Place
The rule that prevents nearly all of this: confirm the award seat is bookable before you transfer anything. Search the flight, get to the point where the programme will actually take your Avios, and only then move the points across. Transfers are usually instant but not always — and availability that exists when you start can be gone when a slower transfer lands.
Two habits that follow from it. Transfer the amount the booking needs rather than a round number, so a leftover balance is not sitting in a programme you do not otherwise use. And be sceptical of transfer bonuses as a reason to move points speculatively: a 30% bonus on miles you never find a use for is worth nothing, and it is the single most common way people end up searching for a way to transfer Avios back.
