Because the chart is distance-based, very short nonstops (under 650 miles) remain among the cheapest redemptions in the entire network. This makes Avios particularly useful for quick hops on American Airlines or other partners where other programs would charge more miles.

The Long-Haul Surcharge Trap

Long-haul awards on British Airways metal are where surcharges can become painful. Fuel and airport fees on BA-operated transatlantic flights often add hundreds of dollars per ticket, sometimes making the award more expensive than a paid ticket in the same cabin.

Some of the best redemptions come from booking partner flights rather than BA itself. Aer Lingus and Qatar frequently offer lower surcharges on routes where BA metal would be expensive. What Avios Actually Costs

Two ways round it, both worth knowing before you transfer anything:

• Book a partner, not BA metal. Avios books American, Iberia, Qatar and Alaska. The same Avios on AA metal across the Atlantic carries a fraction of the surcharge, because the fee follows the operating carrier rather than the programme.
