Flights to Latin America are one of the best-kept secrets in the points and miles world. While Asia and Europe get most of the attention, South America offers genuinely excellent value — especially in business class. Cash prices for lie-flat seats from the US to Buenos Aires or Lima regularly hit $1,800–$2,500 one-way, and the best programs let you book those same seats for 30,000–50,000 miles. The math works out to 4–6.5 cents per point, which is outstanding for a region this accessible.
The key advantage of Latin America is the network. Avianca and LATAM Airlines dominate the region through Star Alliance and Oneworld respectively, with extensive route maps connecting dozens of cities. American Airlines has the deepest US–Latin America schedule of any US carrier, and Copa Airlines serves as Panama’s hub carrier connecting most of Central and South America. Add in the ability to use British Airways Avios for dirt-cheap intra-LATAM hops, and you can build entire multi-city itineraries on points.

The routes with the most award availability are Miami–Lima, Miami–Buenos Aires, and Houston–Bogotá, followed by DFW–Mexico City and JFK–São Paulo. American Airlines and Avianca both release generous partner award space on these corridors, making South America one of the easiest regions to book with miles.

With American’s massive schedule to the region (DFW, MIA, LAX hubs), availability is plentiful. AA miles come from a cobrand card or Avios — not Citi ThankYou, and not Bilt (that transfer ended June 2024).

The major advantage of Aeroplan is transfer access from all four major banks — Chase, Amex, Citi, and Bilt — making it the most flexible option for Chase UR holders who want South America business class.

Different programs shine at different cities. Here’s the quick summary for the five most popular award travel destinations in Latin America.
Oneworld has the strongest US–Latin America presence thanks to American Airlines’ massive hub operations in Miami and Dallas/Fort Worth, plus LATAM Airlines (the largest carrier in South America). Book through AAdvantage for the best rates on American and LATAM metal, or British Airways Avios for cheap intra-LATAM connections.
Star Alliance is excellent for Avianca routes (Colombia, Peru, Central America) and United’s US–South America schedule. Avianca LifeMiles is the standout Star Alliance partner, offering the cheapest business class rates in the region. Aeroplan provides broader transfer access if you hold Chase points.
Before transferring a single point, confirm the seat exists. Search availability on the operating airline’s website (Avianca at avianca.com, American at aa.com, LATAM at latam.com). Business class award space to South America is generally more available than Asia or Europe, but peak season (December–February) fills up fast.

The cheapest business class award to South America is Avianca LifeMiles at 35,000 miles one-way from the US to Lima or Buenos Aires on Avianca or other Star Alliance partners (LifeMiles does not book LATAM) — against cash prices of $1,800–$2,500. LifeMiles transfer 1:1 from Amex, Citi, and Bilt. For economy, LifeMiles offers 15,000-mile one-way rates; AAdvantage is 30,000. AAdvantage has no US transferable-currency partner (not Citi; Bilt→AA ended June 2024).
Business class to Buenos Aires ranges from 30,000 to 80,000+ miles one-way depending on the program. Avianca LifeMiles is the cheapest at 35,000 miles on Avianca or other Star Alliance partners (LifeMiles does not book LATAM). American AAdvantage charges 57,500 miles. Turkish Miles&Smiles charges 40,000 miles. Air Canada Aeroplan prices it at 50,000 miles. United MileagePlus charges 45,000 miles. Delta SkyMiles is dynamic and usually significantly worse value at 80,000–150,000 miles.
Yes — Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer to several programs useful for Latin America. The best options are British Airways Avios (11,000 miles for intra-LATAM economy hops), Air Canada Aeroplan (50,000 miles business to South America), and United MileagePlus (20,000 miles economy). Chase does not transfer to LifeMiles or AAdvantage directly, so Citi and Bilt are better currencies for the cheapest South America redemptions.
For the best availability, book 3–6 months in advance for economy and 6–11 months out for business class. South America’s peak season is December through February (summer in the Southern Hemisphere), so award space to Buenos Aires, Lima, and São Paulo tightens during those months. Shoulder seasons — March through May and September through November — offer the best combination of availability and weather.
It depends on the airline and booking program. Avianca LifeMiles charges minimal to no fuel surcharges when booking Avianca and other Star Alliance partners. It does not book LATAM. American AAdvantage has low surcharges on its own flights and partner awards. British Airways Avios can carry significant surcharges on BA metal, but intra-LATAM bookings on partner airlines are generally low. United MileagePlus has no fuel surcharges. Aeroplan passes through carrier-imposed surcharges, which vary by airline.
