Why Iberia Beats BA to Europe
High carrier surcharges on British Airways metal frequently erase most of the value when redeeming Avios for flights to Europe. Iberia Plus offers a practical workaround by letting you book the same alliance flights on Iberia-operated aircraft, where taxes and fees stay far lower while the award chart itself prices many routes more favorably during off-peak windows.
The program shares the Avios currency with British Airways and Aer Lingus, so the same points you already hold from Chase or Amex transfers work here. The key difference shows up on Iberia metal: surcharges rarely exceed a few hundred dollars round-trip even in business class, unlike the £300–£600+ often seen on BA long-haul.
Moving Avios Between BA and Iberia
Avios move freely between British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus accounts once you link them through the Avios website. The transfer itself is usually instant and costs nothing, but an Avios account in any programme must be at least 30 days old before it can send or receive Avios, and the name and email on both accounts have to match. Iberia used to impose a stricter rule of its own — a 90-day-old account that had already earned Avios — and you will still find that repeated in older guides. It no longer applies.
Most people keep a small balance in each program rather than moving everything at once. This lets you test availability on Iberia without tying up points that might be needed for a BA short-haul award.
The Off-Peak Madrid Sweet Spot
Off-peak awards to Madrid start at 17,000 miles in economy and 40,500 miles in business class one-way on Iberia Plus. Those rates apply to Iberia metal. Against our transatlantic business estimate of roughly $4,500 round-trip, the 81,000 Avios round-trip works out near 5.5 cents of value per Avios before taxes and surcharges — well above what the same points fetch through most bank travel portals.
The off-peak window covers most shoulder and low seasons into Spain. Peak dates jump to roughly 59,000 miles in business, still competitive with other Avios programs once you factor in the dramatically lower surcharges.
Booking Gotchas
Iberia’s website sometimes shows availability that disappears at the payment screen, so search a second time or try the mobile app if the first attempt fails. Iberia releases award seats cabin by cabin and in small numbers — commonly two business seats on a long-haul departure — so a connecting itinerary will often have business space on one leg and nothing on the other. Price the legs separately before you commit points, rather than assuming the whole journey clears in one cabin.
Partner awards booked through Iberia Plus can carry higher fuel surcharges than Iberia metal. Always compare the final price before transferring points.

Keep short-haul European legs on British Airways Avios, where the distance-based chart starts at 4,000 Avios one-way off-peak for flights under 650 miles, then shift longer transatlantic segments to Iberia Plus for the better surcharges and off-peak pricing.
