Points versus the cash line

For US–Europe business class, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club often wins on raw points when you find Saver space on Virgin metal or a Delta One seat Virgin can book. Air Canada Aeroplan often wins on total trip cost when you book Star Alliance partners, because the cash surcharges are usually much lower than Virgin's carrier-imposed fees on Virgin-operated awards.
Neither program is always cheaper. Compare points, taxes, and the routing for the same week, then transfer to one of them. If you are pricing ANA to Tokyo with Chase points instead, start with how to book ANA Tokyo business with Chase points.

If you only care about Delta One to London, start with Virgin. If you want Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian, or United lie-flats and you care about the cash line, start with Aeroplan.
Side by side: what you are actually comparing
| Factor | Aeroplan | Virgin Atlantic |
|---|---|---|
| How the price is set | Distance bands between zones, with a separate all-other-partners column | Saver maximums when Saver space exists, plus partner pricing that is not the same table |
| US–Europe business points we will actually cite | 60,000 one-way on the North America–Atlantic 0–4,000 mile all-other-partners band | 47,500 standard / 57,500 peak one-way, New York and East Coast Upper Class Saver maximums |
| Cash fees | Partner booking fee of $39, plus taxes. VERIFY the total at checkout. | Virgin metal to the UK often carries large carrier-imposed surcharges. The Points Guy says to expect over $600 one-way. VERIFY the live quote. |
| Where the seats are | Air Canada, United, Lufthansa Group, other Star partners | Virgin metal, and Delta partner awards |
| Chase transfer speed | Often the next business day, and up to about seven. Aeroplan's conversion page. | Often quick from Chase. VERIFY the timing in your portal before a hold expires. |
The 60,000 and 47,500 figures are the same cells our Europe award guide publishes. How the peak price and Delta One fit that page is in the next section, so the two pages are not read as a contradiction.
Aeroplan's June 1, 2026 chart update did not change that 0–4,000 mile all-other-partners business cell. Longer Atlantic bands did move. The update summary includes a 4,001–6,000 mile business price of 75,000, an Air Canada/select-partner 6,001–8,000 mile price of 90,000, and an 8,001+ business price of 110,000. Those are summary figures for longer trips, not a second short-haul price. Open the current chart and match the column and the band to the miles you will actually fly. Aeroplan chart update.
Price your cities, not a slogan. The tool opens on one-way business to London with Chase UR selected, which is the East Coast comparison above. Change the origin if you are leaving from the West Coast, and change the destination if you are not going to London.
When Virgin wins, and when Aeroplan wins
Virgin
- You find Saver Upper Class on Virgin metal, for example East Coast to London, at a points level you like, and you accept the surcharge.
- Delta One shows at Virgin's partner rate and the cash line is one you will actually pay. Read each quote. Some directions are fee-heavy and some are not.
- Your transferable balance is tight, so fewer points matter more to you than a higher cash line.
- Virgin or Delta premium space is simply richer than Star Alliance space from your airport.
Search Reward Flights on virginatlantic.com, or call if the site is incomplete. Write down points and taxes. Then transfer. The surcharge warning in The Points Guy's Flying Club guide is the right companion to a pretty mileage price: on Virgin's own metal to the UK, expect carrier-imposed fees over $600 one-way, and VERIFY that cash line on your date. Do not budget from the article.
Aeroplan
- You want Star Alliance business: Frankfurt, Zurich, Vienna, Munich, or United metal from Newark, Chicago, or San Francisco.
- Virgin's cash line knocks the effective value down even though the points look lower.
- You need a connection or a stopover. Air Canada says each stopover adds 5,000 points on stopovers outside Canada and the US. Confirm the add-on still applies to the routing you build. Aeroplan stopovers.
- You are looking at the same Lufthansa or United seat and United's own dynamic price is worse than Aeroplan's band.
Build the itinerary on aircanada.com. Note the distance band and the partner fee. Aeroplan's Points Predictor is the starting-point tool; the Flight Reward Chart PDF is the table. Compare the all-in cost to Virgin for the same travel week, not the same flight number.
East Coast, West Coast, and our Europe guide
Our best miles for flights to Europe guide stores Virgin Atlantic business at 47,500 miles one-way and Aeroplan business at 60,000 miles one-way. This page uses those same cells. Read them with three labels so they do not fight the rest of the site:
- 47,500 is the standard Saver maximum for New York / East Coast Upper Class on Virgin metal, and it is the number the Europe guide's table shows. Our chart file stores this same 47,500. It is a maximum when Saver space exists, not a promise that every seat prices there.
- 57,500 is the peak Saver maximum on that same East Coast Upper Class row. The Europe guide's table does not have a peak row. Adding it here does not replace 47,500.
- About 50,000 is how that Europe guide describes Delta One partner space booked with Virgin miles (its caption says own-metal 47,500 / Delta One 50,000). That is a partner award, not the Virgin-metal peak price. The step-by-step on that guide also talks about finding Delta-operated seats in a 47,500–50,000 range. Use 50,000 as the guide's Delta One figure, and 57,500 only for peak Virgin metal from the East Coast.
West Coast Saver maximums on the same Virgin table run higher than the New York row, about 67,500 standard and 77,500 peak. VERIFY the row for your gateway. Do not export the East Coast 47,500 to Los Angeles and call it the same award.
A longer West Coast to Europe trip can also push Aeroplan out of the 0–4,000 mile band into one of the higher bands in the June 1, 2026 summary. Price the flown miles, not the great-circle distance you wish you were flying. Positioning to New York on a separate ticket to unlock an East Coast Virgin Saver can work. Price that domestic leg honestly before you call it a hack.
The practical version of the cheapest of these programs is business class to Europe under 60,000 miles. Use that for the wider lineup. Use this page when the decision is specifically Aeroplan versus Virgin.
Transfer checklist
- Create or verify Flying Club and Aeroplan. The name matches the bank.
- Confirm the seat in the booking path you will actually use.
- Check for a transfer bonus. Bonuses change. Do not assume last month's percentage is still live.
- Transfer only what that ticket needs, plus a small buffer if the phone agent bills a different total.
- Ticket the same day the miles post when you can.
- Book the hotel after the air is ticketed. Hotels.com or Expedia for city hotels, VRBO for a longer stay, Tiqets or Klook for museums and day tours. No card apply links on this page.
You can split a Chase balance across two transfers, but each transfer is final. Do not move a pile to Virgin "just in case" if Aeroplan was the plan.
Frequently asked questions
Is Virgin Atlantic still the default for Europe business class?
It can be, on points, for certain Virgin-metal or Delta One seats. It is not automatically cheaper once surcharges are included. Add the cash column. On Virgin's own metal to the UK, published examples run over $600 one-way, and you should verify the live quote. Delta metal booked with Virgin miles can be a much smaller cash line. Our Europe guide is the page that carries that Delta example.
How many Aeroplan points is US–Europe business?
On the North America–Atlantic 0–4,000 mile band, all-other-partners business is 60,000 one-way. That matches our chart file and the Europe guide. It is not a flat price for every US city. Longer bands changed on June 1, 2026. Verify the band for your flown miles on the current Flight Reward Chart.
Can I transfer the same Chase points to both?
You can split a balance, but each transfer is final. Search both, then move points to the program that has the seat.
What should Chase Sapphire holders do first?
Search both. If you hate fees, bias Aeroplan. If you have a specific Virgin Upper Class or Delta One Saver and the fee is acceptable, bias Virgin. Capital One holders should confirm whether the Virgin path in their portal is Virgin Red connected to Flying Club. Citi holders should confirm the card before assuming either program.
Europe, after the ticket is issued. Hotels.com or Expedia for city hotels, VRBO for a longer stay, Tiqets or Klook for museums and day tours.
Book the hotel only after the award is ticketed. These are the household sites we already use. Award Optimizer may earn a commission if you book through them. The mileage figures on this page are not sponsored.
Search both, then transfer once
Use 47,500 as the East Coast standard Saver maximum and as the Europe guide's Virgin cell. Use 57,500 only for that row's peak. Use about 50,000 when you mean the Europe guide's Delta One figure. Use 60,000 for Aeroplan only on the short Atlantic all-other-partners band. Then read the cash line.
