When to Book Award Flights: Chart vs Search

A published chart keeps its mile price while you wait for a seat. A dynamic program shows the price only in the search, and that price can change.

A Chart Price and a Search Price

When you book depends on which kind of price the program publishes. A chart price is a number you can hold while you wait for a seat. A dynamic price is whatever the search shows on the day you look, and the program says that number can change.

United MileagePlus publishes no award chart. The operator page states last-seat availability and sends members to the booking search, and United states award pricing is subject to change without notice. Pricing is dynamic. The stored figures are unverifiable starting levels, not a chart. The stored transatlantic business starting level is 60,000 miles one-way.

On that same transatlantic row, Star Alliance carriers price from Aeroplan’s fixed All other partners column, not from the dynamic Select Partners column. Business class on that fixed column is 60,000 miles one-way. The digits match. The meaning does not. One number is a starting level you re-check in the search. The other is a published partner price you can plan around while you wait for the seat.

What You Can Plan Around

Atmos Rewards still publishes per-partner award charts, so the program remains chart-based rather than dynamic. For a chart program, the timing question is whether a seat is there, not whether the mile price moved.

Delta SkyMiles publishes no award chart. Pricing is dynamic, and the stored figures are unverifiable starting levels, not a chart. Awards may require higher prices depending on routing rules and restrictions. Read the price in the search before you transfer.

Avianca LifeMiles no longer publishes an award chart. The figures we still store are last-known starting levels, not a fixed price. Search before transferring.

The chart versus dynamic pricing guide separates those two products. This page is about what that split does to the booking calendar.

Peak, Off-Peak, and Both Directions

British Airways publishes no numeric Avios chart. Pricing is fixed rather than dynamic, with peak and off-peak bands, but it is published only through the booking tool. The figures in our file are an unverified snapshot and should not be treated as operator-confirmed. The band is part of the price, and you see it when you search, not on a table this site can quote as confirmed.

Iberia Plus pricing is fixed with peak and off-peak bands, surfaced through the booking flow rather than a published table. Those figures are an unverified snapshot and should not be presented as operator-confirmed. Treat the band you see in the search as the price for that date.

ANA own-metal one-way awards exist for tickets issued on or after June 24, 2025. This transatlantic row stores business as 88,000 miles round-trip and leaves one_way empty, because that round-trip cell has no matching one-way figure. Do not halve it.

Promos and Member-First Seats

Flying Blue is fully dynamic, and the stored figures are starting levels. Monthly Promo Rewards cut selected routes up to 25%, and they are checked the first week of each month. The stored transatlantic business starting level is 60,000 miles one-way.

Lufthansa own metal is no longer chart-priced. Where a journey is only Air Dolomiti, Austrian, Discover, Lufthansa, Lufthansa City, or SWISS, mileage is calculated dynamically at booking. The published chart applies to Star Alliance partner metal, and those chart amounts are round-trip.

Lufthansa First is priced dynamically since 3 June 2025, so there is no fixed mile price. Lufthansa releases First inventory to Miles & More members before partners see it. Price it at booking. The stored figure is a last-known level, not a chart rate.

Before You Transfer

Run the route through the search tool and read each program as the kind of price it actually is. A fixed partner figure, such as the Aeroplan business price above, is a number you can plan around while you wait for a seat. A dynamic starting level is the search result on the day you book.

The award availability guide and the compare availability page put those programs next to each other. Transfer only after the search shows the seat at the price you intend to book.

Flight delayed or canceled? Under EU rules you may be owed real cash compensation — even on award tickets. AirHelp checks your eligibility for free and only takes a fee if they win your claim.

The Bottom Line

Book a chart award when the seat exists, because the published mile price is already the plan. For a dynamic program, the plan is the search itself. United states that award pricing is subject to change without notice. Flying Blue’s stored figures are starting levels. Check the route on the explore map before you transfer.
